A Biography of Prof Leroy Chuma Edozien
(Ubili ka Nkwu of Asaba), and the Chairman Senator Peter O. Nwaoboshi’s (SPON) 2023 Campaign Council

“Leroy Chuma Edozien, is a medical doctor, doctor of law, author, politician, and the current (2019-2022) President of the International Society of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISPOG). The focus of his career has been on clinical risk management, perinatal mental health, and promotion of a biopsychosocial approach to clinical practice.

Early Life:
Born in London (12.06.54) to a Nigerian father (Onia Gilbert) and British-Irish mother (Anna Maria) and brought up in Nigeria.

He obtained his primary medical qualification at the University of Ibadan. Has degrees of Bachelor of Science (Physiology) and Master of Science (Chemical Pathology) of the University of Ibadan. Obtained the specialist qualifications of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG), and membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI). He also has Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree of the University of London (External Programme), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Medical Law and Ethics, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Medical Law at the University of Glasgow.

Career:
Dr Edozien trained as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the University Hospital of Wales, Royal Bolton Hospital, Royal Oldham Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, and Wythenshawe Hospital.

In 2018 he was selected by peers as one of the top 70 Nigerian health professionals in the UK at ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the UK National Health Service (NHS). Dr Edozien become President of the North of England Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society, 2010. He served as Chairman of the British Society of Biopsychosocial Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2014-17.

He retired from the NHS in 2017 but continued with an honorary academic contract at the University of Manchester.

Roles in Promoting Quality of Health Care Delivery
Dr Edozien and has been an invited speaker at meetings in Canada, India, South Africa, Malaysia and parts of Europe. From 2002 to 2006 he served as Director of Clinical Audit and Risk Management for Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust, a large teaching hospitals Trust comprising Manchester Royal Infirmary, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital, Royal Eye Hospital and Manchester Dental Hospital.

In this role he provided strategic leadership on clinical quality and patient safety, introduced electronic clinical governance reporting, established a network of patient safety lead persons and protocols, and instituted an annual Clinical Audit and Risk Management Fair. He served the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in various roles including membership of committees on Standards, Consent and Revalidation, authorship of clinical governance guidelines, and development of educational modules.

He undertook assignments pertaining to quality of care for the National Patient Safety Agency and the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Devised the RADICAL framework for implementing, monitoring and reporting risk management and quality improvement, which was described as & a substantial contribution to safer clinical practice and organisational learning. The framework has foundations in schema theory. RADICAL organises knowledge and goals of risk management into a pattern that facilitates the interpreting and processing of information. For two decades (2000-2019), organised an annual UK national conference on Risk Management and Medico-Legal Issues in Women’s Health Care under the joint auspices of his Endowment for Training and Education in Reproduction and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).

Contributions to Research:
Between April 2008 and April 2014, Dr Edozien served as the Lead for Reproductive Health and Childbirth in the Greater Manchester Comprehensive Local Research Network (GM CLRN). Between 2009 and 2014 served as a member of the panels evaluating research proposals submitted to the Health Services and Delivery theme of the UK National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). He also initiated, led or participated in health services research focusing on the engagement of partners in maternity care, how provider behaviour affects clinical outcomes and derivation of data to inform patient counselling

Educational Activities:
Dr Edozien wrote the chapters on clinical governance in major textbooks of Obstetrics and Gynaecology: Munro Kerr’s Operative Obstetrics (12th edition)

Best Practice in Labour and Delivery (2nd edition) and Oxford Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He co-edited the book Biopsychosocial Factors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2017) and edited the Best Practice Research Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology series on Risk Management in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Elsevier 2007, 2013). He has also published 18 book chapters and over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Political Activity:
Started as the student politician at the University of Ibadan, where he held the leadership position of Sigma Chief, Sigma Club, and was elected Chairman of Alexander Brown Hall, the medical students’ hall of residence. His experiences as Public Relations Officer of the Students’ Union are chronicled in the book Ibadan Voices. Dr Edozien joined party politics in Nigeria in 2017. Was a Delta State gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He currently promotes ‘Nigeriaism’ as a vehicle for raising the socio-political consciousness of the citizenry as well as PROTRAIN, a campaign to raise awareness of thrombosis in Nigeria.
