Fidelis Ebu studied Political Science at the University of Abuja, and also holds an Advanced Diploma in Journalism from Times Journalism Institute (TJI), Lagos from where he had earlier obtained a Certificate in Journalism.
Ebu, who has over three decades of experience in journalism, worked for several years with the Daily Times of Nigeria, once Nigeria’s flagship newspaper (on the Sports and Crime Desks).
He worked with The Republic, Mail and Vanguard newspapers on the Sports Desk.
Ebu also had some time with the Nigeriasports.com, the first online publication in the country.
He also contributed to the sports pages of ThisDay and The Guardian respectively.
Ebu, a good mixer, won several awards which include Best Reporter at John Holt Junior Clay Tennis Championship (Lagos Country Club), Best Reporter JK Randle Age Group Swimming Championship, Best Reporter SubSea Squash Tournament (Ikoyi Club 1938), Second Best Reporter Mobil Track and Field Championships, Lagos.
He has covered numerous assignments — local and international, including the All-Africa Games in Algiers, Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers in Niger Republic and Kenya.
He was also Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman, Commitee on Works, House of Representatives (8th National Assembly).
In line with his reportorial experience, he was a member of the Publicity Sub-Committee on Swimming ahead of Nigeria’s participation at the Barcelona Olympic Games of 1992.
He manned the Main Press Centre (MPC) at the 8th All-Africa Games tagged “Abuja 2003”.
Journalists who maintain regular beats are often said to report libelous stories, but Ebu, being an experienced reporter whose reports are research-based, believes it does not mean that what such journalists reported about are wrong but simply that such reports are infused with the passion and emotions that attended those issues as they unfolded.
For over three decades in journalism, he did NOT attract any libel case to the organisations where he had worked.
