Envisaging the conduct of the rescheduled National Population and Housing Census in earnest, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), believes it could play meaningful role to ensure that the National Population Commission, NPC realises green census it is planning.

The national president, NCS, Professor Adesina Sodiya, who was elated that NPC is deployed digital technology to deliver the Population and Housing Census, said any organisation employing digital technology will achieve globally accepted result.

“The use of digital technology requires a lot of support, and we are prepared to support the National Population to achieve credible result. And we are appealing to the incoming Administration not to abandon the Census. This country have not conducted census in the last 17 years, and we are ready to provide the needed support to the NPC to carry out the exercise

“Census is needed for planning, agriculture and give information in our demography,” Prof Adesina Sodiya said while briefing the media over the weekend in Abuja.

According to the NCS president, the Society is already working with the management of NPC, to fix areas of concern.

“Our relationship with NPC just commenced,” he said. “We’ve identified areas they need to give attention to and NPC has accepted that we’ll work together so we can review their work so far. NPC is open and we’ll be able to learn more. The 2023 Population and Housing Census will be successful.”

While responding to questions, Prof Sodiya said the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, headed by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, repeatedly ignored concerns raised by the Society before the conduct of the questioned elections. “Our society wasn’t part of the last general elections. We were invited but rather was late, towards the end.”

In his words, “No systems driven by ICT is perfectly safe. We’re here and ready to assist NPC to achieve the green census without hitch.”
