A team that could not string 2-3 passes together in a game hardly wins trophies in modern football.
Yes, our team was the most technically deficient team because most of the teams we defeated usurped us in possession .
Yes, they had to use the only ploy available because they are not good or comfortable on the ball. We played an unsettled and pressured Cote d’Ivoire at the group stage. We will struggle to get a draw if we play them again 10 times with this same formation.
I think I know a little bit of the technical and tactical sides of soccer.
I wouldn’t be able to go into details on why we lost, but my previous post after the first game underpins my argument.
In modern football, the teams that dominate in club and world soccer tournaments initiate attack from the defence and draw their opponents to the wings to decongest the opponents’ midfield.
We never utilised our wingers or right or left midfield to open up defences.
Sentiments and emotions apart, this team will not qualify for the next FIFA World tournament, except there is an overhaul of the entire team.
Most football analysts did not expect anything from this team, though.
Nonetheless, I congratulate them for reaching the finals and winning the silver.
